Expanding Definitions of the Violence of HateWhen the "Matthew Shepard and James Byrd Jr. Hate Crimes Prevention" Act was signed into law by President Barack Obama in 2009, it expanded the definition of a hate crime in the United States to include crimes committed because of the actual or perceived race, color, religion, national origin of any person or the actual or perceived religion, national origin, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity, or disability of any person. The act both expanded the definition of a hate crime and provided funding and technical assistance to state, local, and tribal jurisdictions to help them investigate and prosecute Hate Crimes more effectively. This program will feature a discussion of how this law has changed the way Hate Crimes are investigated and prosecuted in the United States and some of the training organizations like the Matthew Shepard Foundation are helping to provide for Law Enforcement Agencies to better prevent and police hate crimes in their own jurisdictions.  Monthly LODD Fatality ReportIn August, 12 Fallen Heroes were designated as line-of-duty deaths. Their names will be added to the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial in April of 2024, and they will be honored and forever remembered. May their selflessness, bravery, and sacrifice never be forgotten.  First Ambassador Impact Award Winner RecognizedThe National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund is pleased to announce that Bill Swank, Senior Federal Agent with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, will receive the first-ever Ambassador Impact Award. The National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund depends on the support of a special group of volunteers — called Ambassadors. The NLEOMF Ambassador Program identifies individuals in law enforcement across the nation who believe passionately in our mission to honor the fallen, tell the story of American law enforcement, and make it safer for those who serve. These volunteers work tirelessly to ensure the successful realization of the mission goals tied to the Memorial, Museum, and Officer Safety and Wellness programs. The Ambassador Impact Award honors those driven by internal motivation to aid present-day law enforcement, as evident in their individual and vocational pursuits. On September 29, 2023, Swank will be formally recognized for demonstrating his commitment to the local, county, and federal echelons at the 2023 Annual Awards Ceremony and Reception.
